New Neighborhood Association Forms on Grand Rapids’ West Side
Articles of incorporation filed by the Shawmut Hills Neighborhood Association
The Shawmut Hills Neighborhood Association officially filed articles of incorporation with the State of Michigan on October 1.
Located on Grand Rapids’ West Side, the mostly residential community has gone nearly three decades without active representation.
The decision to organize was motivated in part by the controversial development proposed for 2450 7th Street NW. The City Planning Commission voted to approve the development, despite overwhelming neighborhood opposition, fueled by concerns over pedestrian safety and adverse environmental impacts.
The new association plans to represent the interests of residents to the City and potential developers—but its aims to do more than this, too. According to its bylaws, the Shawmut Hills Neighborhood Association exists to:
Encourage communication, cooperation, and community spirit among residents and other neighborhood stakeholders
Promote neighborhood safety and beautification
Advocate for sound, compatible land use and development
Since its first meeting last July, the association has attracted nearly 200 members and elected a board of directors.
The new bylaws promise Shawmut Hills will be a resident-first association.
Voting privileges are reserved for those who live in the neighborhood, whether they rent or own. Local businesses and individuals who own property within the neighborhood, but do not live in it, are invited to join as associate members. The association aims to work with area schools and faith communities to enhance the community.
Voting members will have final say on annual budgets, dues, and changes to the bylaws. They will have the power to call special meetings and propose amendments. Board meetings will be kept open to members to ensure transparency.
Ultimately, the new association hopes to strengthen the connection between residents—and between the neighborhood and the city.
